1.2 Length of Paper

Reminder to JPL authors: Your hard copy, disks, and external clearance form (1330 - with all appropriate signatures) are all due at the
same time.
2. FORMAT
2.1 FONT
Use 11 or 12 point Times Roman or some other serif (e.g. Garamond, Palatino, Bookman) typeface.
2.2 Paper Size
Set size 8.5 x 11 inches. European authors, please resize A-4 papers.
2.3 Margins
Leave a 1-inch margin on the top, bottom, left and right side of
each page. (See exception for title, below.).
2.4 Page Numbers and Identification
Use the View Header/Footer feature to add last name of primary author and page numbers, centered, at the bottom of the page.
2.5 Title of Paper
The title should in all-capital letters, centered, 1.5 inches below the top of the page, and in boldface type.
2.6 Authors' Names and Affiliations
- State full names.
- Omit titles and degrees, such as Dr., Professor, Colonel, and Ph.D. Affiliations
- Identify affiliations and e-mail addresses listed in
footnotes. (For long author lists, we suggest including the e-mail address of the principal author only.)
Example: Robert O. Green 1
...
1 Jet Propulsion Laboratory (rog@jpl.nasa.gov)
See Section 2.10 for format and content of references.
2.7 Abstract
Do not include an abstract.
2.8 Section and Subsection Headings
Use the decimal and font format used for these instructions.
2.9 Paragraphs
- Indent the start of each paragraph 0.5 inches.
- Single-space within each paragraph. Double-space between paragraphs.
2.9 Footnotes
Use the "Insert Footnote" feature and select "Auto Number".
2.10 References
Specify references in the text by putting the author's last name and the year of publication in parentheses; e.g., (Smith, 1991). If a
reference has more than two authors, list only the first author's last name, followed by "et al." e.g., (Jackson et al., 1989).
List all the references at the end of the paper in alphabetical order.
A reference to an article should include all the authors' names (the senior author's last name should appear before their initials), the
publication date, the title of the article, the name of the journal or other publication in which the articles appears, the journal volume
and number, and inclusive page numbers.
Example: Gillespie, A.R. and A.B. Kahle, 1977, "Construction and Interpretation of a Digital Thermal Inertial Image," Photogramm. Eng. and Rem. Sens.,
vol. 43, no. 1, pp. 983-1000.
A reference to a book should include all the authors' names as above, the year of publication, the title of the book, the name of the publisher,
the place of publication, and specific chapters or pages cited.
Example: Ulaby, F.T., R.K. Moore, and A.K. Fung, 1982, Microwave Remote Sensing Active and Passive, Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Massachusetts,
pp. 102-117.
Notes:
- A personal communication is not a reference because a researcher seeking to duplicate this material would have to find and contact a
person who might move, die, or not want to answer 50 requests for information.
- Likewise, "Submitted to the ..." is not a reference because
the article might be rejected by the journal or withdrawn by the author. These items can be footnotes but not references.
- "In press" is acceptable because there is assurance that the article will be published in the near future, even though date, volume, and number might not be
set.
