The AVIRIS (Airborne Visible/InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) project provides calibrated data from an airborne sensor to customers in NASA, NOAA, EPA, USGS, academia, and industry. The AVIRIS project is catagorized as follows:

Design and Conduct Experiments Process
Airborne Experiments (*.html file)

The technical approach to delivering AVIRIS spectral image data is provided in the structure below with the specific activities listed.

AVIRIS TASK MANAGEMENT

  • Management of the AVIRIS task at JPL
  • Operation tasks planning and scheduling
  • Communication with and between the AVIRIS task, NASA headquarters, JPL and the Dryden aircraft operations
  • Monitoring and reporting AVIRIS status
  • AVIRIS task travel, logistic, graphic, documentation
  • AVIRIS workshop


CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION SCIENCE

  • Validation of AVIRIS laboratory calibration measurements
  • Validation of the generation of AVIRIS data calibration files
  • Airborne Experiments (*.html file)
  • Implementiong in-flight support (*.html file)
  • Field Measurement Support (*.html file)
  • Advanced Capabilities for validation of science experiments (*.html file)
  • Generating and maintaining algorithms/software for the calibration and validation of AVIRIS data
  • Reporting AVIRIS calibration status


EXPERIMENT COORDINATION AND MISSION PLANNING

  • Year-round data acquisition planning with the investigator, Dryden, AVIRIS task, and NASA HQ
  • Maintain AVIRIS flight planning reports in conjunction with Dryden for investigator updates
  • Represent and communicate with investigator before, during and after each data launch and flight
  • Post-flight debriefing of the pilot for data acquisition record
  • Transfer of ship disk and flight log to the AVIRIS Instrument Ground Data System (IGDS) at JPL for data decommutation and data processing
  • Report AVIRIS data status to Dryden following analysis at the data facility


DATA DECOMMUTATION, CALIBRATION AND DISTRIBUTION

  • Management of the IGDS activities and logistics
  • Decommutation and archiving of AVIRIS data
  • Monitoring instrument performance from acquired data
  • Generation and upload of quick-look images to AVIRIS website
  • Execute data processing pipeline to produce L1B and L2 data products
  • Monitoring quality of L1B and L2 data products
  • Maintain AVIRIS specific software
  • Maintenance of system hardware and software
  • Limited support to visiting scientists
  • Distribution of L1B and L2 data products via FTP or hard drive to Investigator(s)
  • Import L1B and L2 data products into AVIRIS Flight Locator Tool
  • Support of AVIRIS engineering analysis
  • Generate backup of raw data to LTO Tape Library System


SENSOR OPERATION, CALIBRATION AND MAINTENANCE

  • Engineering operations task management, planning, scheduling and oversight
  • Logistical planning and transportation for AVIRIS and ground support equipment shipping
  • Logistical planning for AVIRIS engineer and technician launch site support
  • AVIRIS engineer and technician support for each launch
  • Pre-flight preparation and monitoring of AVIRIS
  • Post-flight care and monitoring of AVIRIS
  • Historic monitoring of AVIRIS instrument performance
  • Semiannual spectral calibration measurements
  • Semiannual radiometric calibration measurements
  • Semiannual geometric calibration measurements
  • Report calibration measurements
  • aintenance of spectral, radiometric and geometric calibration equipment and standards (*.html file)
  • Maintenance of ground support equipment
  • Maintenance of AVIRIS instrument diagnostic equipment
  • Routine maintenance of AVIRIS during data operations
  • Evaluate level of preventative maintenance required
  • Preventative and routine maintenance of the AVIRIS sensor during non-data operations
  • AVIRIS ER 2 install (*.html file)
  • Maintenance of AVIRIS documentation and spare parts
  • Resolution of anomalies affecting the optical, analog and digital electrical, mechanical, cryogenic, and calibration subsystems of the AVIRIS sensor


REPORTING AND DOCUMENTATION

  • Results of these activities will be reported at the AVIRIS team meetings, communication to the AVIRIS Technical Group Supervisor, and through written documentation where requested.
